6 Summer Health Swaps
By Brandi Goodman
All it takes is a few swaps and you can make some major strides in your health. Summer is normally a healthier time already. People are getting outside more often. They're enjoying physical activity. There's still some summer health swaps you can make, however, that will really ramp up your well-being.
Swap a Bun With a Lettuce Wrap
Summer barbecues and picnics are common during the nicest months of the year. Hot dogs, burgers, and sandwiches are popular entrees at these events. The bread often gives far more calories and carbs than you need, though. Swap out your bun with a lettuce wrap for a healthier alternative. You'll get to enjoy the flavor of the meat even more without all that bread in the way.
Swap Your Frappuccino With an Ice Water
Frappuccinos and similar frozen coffee drinks are popular when it's hot outside. It gives you a cold caffeine rush. You really shouldn't be drinking too much caffeine, though, particularly when you're going to be outdoors and enjoying the sun. You'll get dehydrated quickly. You need to be drinking water throughout the day to keep your body properly hydrated. Opt for an ice water, perhaps with some fruit infused, for a summery drink that fuels you.
Swap Cereal With a Yogurt Parfait
Cereal may provide a quick and easy breakfast, but many options have too much sugar. A yogurt parfait mixed with fruit is a much better option for summer. You can make it the night before and have it ready to go in the morning, or come up with a quick solution before you head out the door. Yogurt, fruit, and granola are the typical ingredients to layer.
Swap Store-Bought Popsicles With Homemade Versions
Popsicles provide a cool summer treat. Many store-bought versions are full of sugar and made with artificial ingredients. Opt for a homemade fruitsicle instead. They're easy enough to make and will cut out the sugar and calories.
Swap Flip-Flops With Athletic Shoes
Flip-flops are a popular summer shoe. They provide a basic bottom covering while letting your foot be mostly free. Sandals like this are not actually ideal for the health of your feet. They don't offer any shock absorption and will usually leave your feet and leggings aching after walking in them a while. You need athletic shoes with moisture-wicking socks to really keep your feet comfortable.
Swap Television Time With Reading
Some shows air only in the summer. You may find yourself spending too much binge-watching TV instead of getting outside. Even if you don't want to do something active, you can swap television time with outdoor reading for better mental health. Too much TV isn't good for you. Reading is good for your brain health and can be done in the sun where you get in your dose of Vitamin D.
Make some swaps this summer and enjoy better health. Just a few changes can make a big difference for your well-being. If these aren't some changes you can deal with, then come up with your own solutions to improve your wellness.
