Your Holiday Fitness Routine

By Brandi Goodman

The holidays can make it hard to maintain an exercise plan. Your ever-growing to-do list contains too many tasks and the daylight hours just aren't enough to accomplish it all. No matter what you have to get done, however, it's imperative that you find time for fitness so you can maintain both your mental and physical well-being. Make a holiday fitness routine to help yourself stay on track this season.

Make Family Time Fitness Time

Chances are, you're still fitting in family time even throughout the holidays. Make sure this time incorporates fitness so you can get the best of both worlds. Say you plan on heading out to look at Christmas lights. Rather than drive, have the whole family walk around the neighborhood for the gorgeous viewing. You'll all get to have your holiday bonding time while exercising as well.

Bring Fitness Gear When You Travel

Perhaps you plan on going on vacation or staying with family over the holidays. You may think your fitness routine won't work while you're away. However, all you have to do is bring some simple fitness gear with you and you can work out anywhere. A single pair of weights, some resistance bands, or even a workout DVD is all you need for a good exercise.

Make the Most of Your Chore Time

Do you even realize you're working out when you're tackling your household chores? Make the most of your chore time by turning up the music and really getting into the process. You'll work up a sweat and burn a ton of calories, which is all you really need for a workout. Your holiday shopping, time spent shoveling or icing the driveway, decorating, and cleaning all counts.

Walk Where You Can

Perhaps you're out doing your holiday shopping. Take the stairs and skip the elevator or escalator. Take the time to check out every store and see what special finds you come across. Any extra steps you take can greatly improve your exercise time and have you burning more calories. Even when it's cold outside, you should still take outdoor walks. The outdoor air can be great for your mind and walking is always an easy exercise option no matter the time of year. Just be sure to bundle up.

Fitness is necessary for overall health. Make sure to create a holiday fitness routine you can follow to help yourself maintain your exercise habits and keep yourself in good spirits. Exercise is necessary for both mental well-being and physical health.
