See the Ways You Can Enhance Your Eye Health

By Brandi Goodman

Healthy Vision Month in May marks the perfect time to start learning more about eye health. You always want to do your part to keep your eyes as healthy as possible so the effects of aging and the environment do not have such a drastic impact on vision. A decline in vision as well as eye problems will start to come about sooner rather than later if you don't find ways to prevent it.

Add Essential Nutrients to Your Diet

Certain nutrients and vitamins can help your eye health. Be sure these are included in your daily diet so you can improve your vision easily. Lutein, zeaxanthin, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, zinc, and essential fatty acids are all necessary for your eyes to work well. You can eat lean meats, carrots, eggs, apples, broccoli, and leafy greens to gain all of these nutritional benefits.

Protect Your Eyes From Light

Both natural sunlight and lights in your home can cause damage to the eyes if you are not careful. When outside, always be sure to wear sunglasses that offer UV protection and wear a hat or visor. This protects you better from the sun's harmful rays. Never look directly into the sun, either. It is also not advised to look at screens for too long. The blue light emitted from them can cause macular degeneration. This type of light penetrates all the way to the inner lining in the back of the eye. Light-sensitive cells within the retina will be damaged if you expose yourself to blue light for too long.

Get Lots of Exercise

It may seem strange that exercise could help your eyes, but it truly can. High cholesterol and high blood pressure can lead to an assortment of eye problems. Keeping your pressure and cholesterol levels low through exercise can prevent this from happening. Make sure you're getting at least 30 minutes per day so your body can operate efficiently.

Stop Smoking

Eye disease can develop easily if you're a smoker. People who smoke increase their risk of developing cataracts. They are also more likely to develop age-related macular degeneration that can cause blind spots to form. Once you stop smoking, you can decrease your risk factor significantly.

Healthy Vision Month shouldn't be the only time you consider your eyes. Use this month to start learning about how you can care for your eyes better and continue to follow these habits for the rest of your life. Doing so will maintain your vision and prevent aging from causing damage early.
