Boosting the Power of Your Brain
By Donna Stark
The Monday after a long, busy weekend. The first day back after a week of being sick. No matter what the time, we've all experienced workouts where our bodies just didn't feel up to speed, am I right? Thankfully, that feeling doesn't last very long though, because as soon as we get back into the swing of our routines, we generally start to feel better. Well, the same can be said about our brains too! If you constantly forget names or where you placed your keys, if your brain always feels as if it is weighed down under a heavy fog, if, like your body, it simply doesn't feel up to speed, it's time to get it back into a "thinking" routine. Are you ready? Let's go!
Getting Your Brain Up to Speed
Just because you have passed a certain age, that doesn't mean you need to settle for memory loss or distortion. You are never too old to make a difference with the function of your brain. Take a look at a few of the ways in which you can challenge and sharpen your cognitive skills.
- Brain games - There is nothing better to improve your mental function than daily brain exercises, and fortunately, you don't have to spend a ton of money on them. Play cards with some friends, enjoy a new book, or download some puzzles and games onto your phone. Just be sure to engage your brain with something new every day!
- Exercise - Daily exercise gets your oxygen-rich blood pumping and when that happens, blood flow to the brain is improved! Exercise also helps to slow the degeneration of brain cells. It is critical for both your physical and mental health that you fit at least 30 minutes of exercise into your routine every day. That's not too much, is it?
- Hand switch - Here's a challenge for you. Try switching your hands while completing your daily tasks (but only do this with tasks that won't jeopardize your safety). You can switch your hands while brushing your teeth, writing your shopping list, or using your computer mouse. You may be surprised by how well you do!
- Upside down life - Want to stimulate your brain even more? Change the direction of your watch, hang your kitchen clock upside down, or work on puzzles that require you to read words that are printed backward. It's a great way to shake your brain into action!
Boosting Your Brain
Even though the suggestions above seem fairly simple to do, they will work wonders for your overall brain health! So start today and get ready for some serious brainpower!
