3 Drinks That Can Lull You to Sleep

By Genevieve Cunningham

Sometimes falling asleep feels absolutely impossible. You lie awake, toss and turn, stare at the ceiling, and pray for sleep to finally find you. While this really isn’t much of a problem if it happens on occasion, it can cause serious problems if you can’t seem to find sleep on a regular basis. Before turning to medicine or an invasive procedure, take a look at these warm drinks that may be able to lull you to sleep and help you finally get the rest you need.

Warm Milk

You’ve probably heard that warm milk is good for sleeping. But why? It’s thought that one of the chemicals found in milk, the same chemical found in turkey, actually makes you feel full, satisfied, and sleepy. When you can’t sleep at night, heat up some milk on the stove or in the microwave and sip. The warmth comforts the belly and the chemical tells the brain that it’s time to rest. Just be sure that you don’t get it too hot, as it won’t taste the way you’re expecting and may even burn your mouth and throat on the way down.

Hot Tea

The great thing about tea is that there are so many options. Black tea, green tea, chamomile, peppermint, sleepytime … the options are almost endless. You can search for a flavor that is calming and soothing to you, personally, and then sip it to your heart’s content. It’s probably a good idea to make sure the tea is caffeine-free and to avoid massive amounts of sugar, so as not to further complicate your sleeping issues.

Cherry Juice

If you’re a fan of cherry flavoring, you’re in luck! It’s thought that cherry juice can actually help you find a little sleep. Cherry can be slightly tart, so make sure you’re ready for the unique taste, but it also has a bit of sweetness to it. It’s an excellent choice for anyone who is lactose intolerant, or who just needs a bit of flavor with their drinks. Do your best to avoid the super sugary juice options, as these might have the opposite effect that you’re going for.

When you can’t sleep, get up! Put on some warm slippers, wrap up in a robe, and pour yourself something warm and soothing to drink. Use these drinks as a starting point, and you may be able to find a little rest without turning to medicines, crazy schedules, or complete exhaustion.
