Too Hot to Sleep? Try These Tips!

By Genevieve Cunningham

Everyone needs good sleep. When we don't get the sleep we need, we suffer in multiple ways. We might experience a bad mood, aches and pains, an inability to concentrate, and more. It's a frustrating and sometimes debilitating feeling. And when the warm weather arrives, getting good sleep can become even more difficult. When you're too hot, sleep feels almost impossible. Luckily, you can fight the heat and the insomnia with just a few helpful tips.

Lower the Temperature

If it's possible, the first thing you should do is actually turn down the temperature. Whether you need to turn the air conditioner to a lower temperature or just turn the fan on higher, lowering the temperature of the room can help lull you to sleep. Though this seems obvious, many people skip this simple step and suffer through the heat instead.

Consider Your Bedding

Your bedding can make a big difference in the way your body feels. If you're too hot, thick bedding will only make it worse. Strip your bed down to the sheets or a light blanket. But get rid of the comforters or quilts or anything keeping in the heat. This can make you feel more comfortable, which then helps you get higher quality sleep.

Get Clean

When it's hot out, our bodies feel sweaty and dirty a lot faster. If you're a morning shower kind of person, you may need to add a quick shower to your nighttime routine as well. This helps you feel clean -- which often corresponds to feeling cooler. Get clean, put on light and breezy pajamas, and it may be all you need to get rid of the heat and invite sleep.

Stay Healthy Everywhere Else

The healthier you feel, the easier it's going to be to sleep. Though you can't really control everything about the temperature each day, you can certainly control your own body and health. Make sure you're eating well and drinking plenty of water. Get some movement throughout the day so that you'll be tired at night. The healthier your body, the better you'll feel, and the easier it may be to find the sleep you need.

The heat can really mess up your sleep. And in the spring and summer, heat in the south can be unbearable. Use these tips to cool down, and you may find better sleep and a boost in health like never before.
