Don't Let Depression and Stress Get You Down
By Stephen R. Farris
Most all of us deal with some type of stress on a daily basis. It could be anything from driving in traffic, problems at home or school, work, or even watching and listening to news broadcasts.
Whatever the reasons that may cause us stress, it doesn't have to get you down to the point of being depressed about it. Take charge of your stressful situations so that it doesn't lead to that.
There are a few simple things you can do to take charge.
Work to Manage Your Stress
It's not always as easy as it sounds, but with a little self-care, it could be the game-changer you need. A few ways to do this is to:
- Get better sleep
- Eat healthier
- Connect socially: call or visit friends more often
- Don't be afraid to ask for help
- Reserve time to rest and relax
Distract Yourself From Negative Thoughts
Sometimes with stress comes negativity. Say for instance, someone cuts you off in traffic. Your first response might be to stream out at the driver, who probably won't hear a word you said. The thought of what happened may linger the rest of your day, causing you to be in a bad mood. It doesn't have to let you get to that point. Distract yourself from being outraged so it doesn't affect your mood for the remainder of the day. Maybe remind yourself at that instance that there are inconsiderate drivers and it's something everyone has to deal with. Let it go and move on. You have better, more positive things to think about.
Write Down How You Feel
This is really a good tip. Instead of keeping that stress or depressed feelings bottled up inside, try writing down the things that are bothering you. It's a great way to release those negative feelings and the good part is you can tear up the paper and throw it away. Try it sometime. You'll feel differently afterwards.
Overall, try to focus more on positive ways to deal with stressful situations. Oftentimes it could be as simple as stopping yourself for a moment and taking a few deep breaths.
