Health and Fitness Goals for Lasting Results

By Donna Stark

You need to do something different in your life in order to improve your overall health and well-being. You already know that. You also already know which lifestyle habits will get you there, don't you? But here's the thing. Eating an extra salad each month and taking a walk to your mailbox once a week isn't going to help. But what will help is if you commit to healthy habits every single day, because nothing will change if nothing ever changes. And yes, that's a play on words, but they couldn't be truer when it comes to your health and wellness.

Setting Goals

Wanting to improve your health and fitness, and setting goals to do so, is a perfect way to make lasting change. It's a chance to challenge and push yourself to higher levels. It's exactly what you need to keep moving forward. And if you aren't too sure exactly where to start, here are some tips.

  • Motivating - Your goals have to be something that is motivating to you. If you have little interest in the final outcome, you are not going to care as much about achieving it. So make sure that the goal has value and that it relates to something very important in your life!
  • Realistic - The goals you set also have to be smart. And by that I mean, they need to be realistic, attainable, and specific. What is the end result you desire? How long are you giving yourself to reach it? Do you have a clear plan in place that will help you find and define success?
  • Visible - Writing down your goals and keeping them visible at all times will help remind you what you are working so hard for. They are also a great tool to use to fight those moments of weakness, so tape them to your mirrors, to the shelves in your pantry, or even on the refrigerator door.
  • Ongoing - Achieving your health and fitness goals is a major accomplishment, but what happens once you reach the mark of success? If your goal was to lose weight or lower your cholesterol, how are you going to maintain the end result? If it was to increase your strength, how are you going to stay at that level? Just because you reached your goal doesn't mean your work is over. You have to take the end plan into consideration.

The Perfect Result

Setting goals is a lot more than simply stating out loud what you want to achieve. You have to come up with a plan that will get you there and then help you sustain the results you worked so hard for. So start today and change the direction of your life. You know you can do it!
