Why You Should Skip the Late Night Get-Together

By Genevieve Cunningham

It’s finally closing time, and you can’t wait to clock out and have some time to yourself. For many people, this often includes a late night get-together with friends. What better way to unwind and get ready for the next day? While a few late nights probably won’t hurt you or your health, it’s important to note that multiple late nights may not be the best for your long-term well-being. Take a look at why you may want to scale back on the late nights, and instead reach for a good book and a hot bath instead.

Because a Lack of Sleep Adds Up

After one or two nights of poor sleep, you’ll probably hardly notice a difference. You may experience a little grogginess or sluggishness the next day, but you’re quite sure that it won’t cause any long-term damage. The unfortunate part is that this is not always true. A lack of sleep really adds up over time. Even if you’re not keeping count, your body definitely is! Before long, your body systems are sluggish, functions begin to work slightly inefficiently, and your health declines. While a night or two might not hurt when spread out over time, a continual lack of sleep is detrimental to your well-being.

Because Late Nights Equal Groggy Mornings

Mornings are hard enough. Why make them more difficult by not getting enough sleep? Mornings after a late night tend to be riddled with exhaustion, confusion, lack of concentration, and sometimes even aches and pains. You can avoid these by simply getting the rest your body needs. If you need to spend a night out, go for it. But don’t let it become a habit that turns every morning into a battle for health and productivity.

Because a Well Rested Body is Generally a Healthier Body

We tend to forget that our bodies, quite literally, need rest. Without rest, the various systems in the body are not able to rejuvenate and work as they should. This is why those who don’t get enough rest often suffer from more illness, pain, and general discomfort in everyday life. In order to avoid this, make rest a priority over those late night gab fests.

Do you have to skip every late night get-together? Of course not! Feel free to indulge from time to time. But if you’re planning on staying up late every single night, you may want to reconsider your plans. Keep a bit of balance in your life, especially when it comes to fun and sleep. The better rested you are, the more you can enjoy your downtime, and the greater chance you have of staying healthy and strong for a lifetime.
