3 Reasons to Celebrate Your Health Now
By Genevieve Cunningham
We spend so much time thinking about and wishing for better health. We think that if we could only lose that weight, or if we could only run faster, or if we could only build stronger muscles, then we would finally look and feel healthy. We're constantly telling ourselves everything that's wrong with our health. And while there really are plenty of things that we'd all like to change about our health and wellness, there are plenty of things to celebrate too. And maybe it's time we start doing it! If you're guilty of finding the gloom and doom in your health, take a look at these reasons to start celebrating now.
Something is Going Right
Most of the time, even in some of the worst circumstances, you probably have at least a few things going your way. Maybe you're overweight, have a physical disability, or suffer from chronic pain. None of these are appealing. But what good things are happening? Are you able to move, use your mind, and enjoy life? If we can focus on the good things instead of the bad, it may put us in a more positive mindset, which then helps to breed more positive thinking.
Positivity Breeds Positivity
We mentioned it, but let's look at it further. Our thoughts are like a snowball. When we think negative thoughts, more negative thoughts follow. And then more and more and more until we're consumed by negative thoughts. With this approach, we're likely contributing to our own demise. But when we're able to think positive thoughts, more positive thoughts follow. Our snowball rolls in the other direction, and we may find parts of our bodies or minds healing. Research has shown time and again that positive thinking matters (hello placebo effect!). If you want to feel good, you have to start thinking good thoughts, and the feelings in the body will follow.
It Might Help You Make More Changes
Sometimes when we notice the things that are going right, it's easier to find the motivation to change the things that are going wrong. Maybe you're at a really healthy weight but you don't move well. Acknowledging this might help you implement some stretching or exercise. Maybe you're really good at diet but not so good at drinking enough water. Making this connection might give you a little push to change it. Recognition is the first step. Noticing a problem, along with the good, might help you finally move on and make things happen.
Sometimes we just need to pay a little more attention to the good things. And when it comes to health, doing so may prove incredibly beneficial to your overall wellness. Try noticing the good in your life, and watch your health start moving in a positive direction.
