Chiropractic Care for Stress
By Randi Morse
Stress is, unfortunately, a necessary part of life. While it's great to try to reduce the amount of stress you have, living a completely stress-free life is pretty much a beautiful, but impossible, dream. Even though stress is extremely common, that doesn't make it a good thing. Stress, especially ongoing chronic stress, can be a contributing factor to a wide array of health issues like heart disease, depression, and diabetes. Stress also affects the nervous system, which can be a huge cause of problems as well.
How Does Stress Affect the Nervous System?
The nervous system is a very complicated system to understand. Have you ever seen a colored map of the New York City subway lines? A complete map of the nervous system looks much like that. There are a number of different systems of nerves including the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system. All of these systems are under the umbrella of the autonomic nervous system, which is basically a complicated term for "automatic." These nervous system functions work automatically in our body.
If you are constantly dealing with stress, even if it's at a low level, the sympathetic nervous system can remain active. This part of the nervous system is known as the "fight or flight" response. It signals your body that something is wrong and that you need to be prepared to either run or stand your ground and fight. This can tighten your muscles and get your heart ready to pump more blood, which supplies more oxygen to the muscles. Someone dealing with chronic stress constantly has their sympathetic nervous system, or the "fight or flight" response, active. This stresses out the body and can cause physical pain while contributing to other bodily conditions as well.
Chiropractic Care and Stress
If you have a constant level of stress a visit to the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic can be a huge help. A chiropractor can help adjust the spine to allow the sympathetic nervous system, which runs straight through the spine, to relax. This tells your brain to turn off the "fight or flight" response, which is why some people who visit the chiropractor begin to feel relief immediately following their visit.
At The Joint Chiropractic you'll find open office hours, making it easy to fit a visit to the chiropractor in your schedule no matter how busy you are. You'll also find affordable rates as well. If you are dealing with constant, low-level stress, take some time to visit The Joint Chiropractic to see how a chiropractic appointment can help.
