A Clean Home for Improved Health

By Donna Stark

One of the biggest challenges parents across the nation must overcome is how to keep their children healthy and safe. And although there is certainly more than one way to do this, you might find that the majority of parents focus on one common thing, a clean house. If you want to keep your children as free from illness as you possibly can, you may also want to focus on reducing the number of germs and allergens in your home. Here are three different ways you can do so.

Clean and Disinfect Common Surface Areas

There is a big difference between cleaning and disinfecting. Cleaning involves picking up toys, removing dirt and dust, wiping down the kitchen counters, and washing dishes. It's something that should definitely be done on an as-needed basis, even if that means you are doing it every day. Cleaning can help reduce the risk of accidental falls, breathing issues, and injuries in the kitchen.

Disinfecting, however, is the actual killing of germs. You should disinfect your home regularly, especially when a loved one is sick or if you have visitors over. Though there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to disinfecting things in your home, you should definitely focus on high-touch surfaces, such as doorknobs, faucets, light switches, and bathroom fixtures.

Clean Dust Traps Often

In addition to all the hard surfaces in your home, make sure you are cleaning your ceiling fans, blinds, curtains, and carpets regularly because these can be the biggest traps for dust in the home! Taking the time to remove the dust and dander from these things will help keep the air in your home clean and safe to breathe! If you have any allergy or asthma sufferers in the house, this will make a huge difference in their comfort levels!

Wash Bedding Regularly

There is nothing you and your family are more up-close and personal to than the sheets you sleep on, so make sure they are always clean, especially if someone is feeling under the weather. The general rule is to wash your bedding at least once a week, but if a family member is sick or if pets are allowed access to the beds, you may want to consider washing the sheets and blankets even more. Frequent washings help reduce the number of germs and allergens you and your family will be exposed to.

Maintaining a Clean Home

Keep your home free of germs and allergens by cleaning it daily and sanitizing it often. And don't forget to ask everyone in the family to help! With extra hands tackling the workload, you will have more time to spend together!
