Tips to Avoid Back Pain
By Sara Butler
If there’s one part of the body many people have problems with at some point, it’s the back. Back pain is a common problem for many people – and many people just try to grin and bear it, accepting it as a part of life. Of course, the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic know you don’t just have to live with back pain. Regular treatment at the chiropractor’s office can help, but there are also some things you can do each day to help you avoid back pain.
Pay Attention When Lifting
Practicing poor lifting technique is a common cause of back pain due to low back sprains and strains. That’s why observing proper form when lifting any object is so important. Make sure to:
- Keep your back straight
- Use the power of your legs to lift
- Avoid twisting when carrying something heavy, instead pivot
Proper lifting will go a long way to keep your back healthy and avoid injury, so make sure you use the right technique – and don’t be afraid to ask for help when something is too heavy!
Eat Right
Proper nutrition is also a very important component of spine health. Make sure to drink a lot of water in order to keep the discs that cushion your spine healthy and eat foods that help you to maintain a healthy weight. When excess weight is carried around the midsection, it can cause the muscles in the lower back to work overtime, eventually causing back pain. Make sure to reach and maintain a healthy weight to reduce the chances of experiencing back pain.
Exercise Right
Exercise is an essential component of good health for many reasons, but it can also lead to injury if you don’t exercise properly. Doing too much for your fitness level or using poor form when you exercise is an easy way to injure your back and experience back pain. Make sure you warm up correctly and cool down after exercise, taking time to stretch before and after in order to maintain flexibility.
Don’t Sit for Too Long
Extended periods of sitting are terrible for your back health, so make sure you get up at least once an hour to move around, stretch, and change up your posture.
