Choosing a Route for Your Walk (or Run!)

By Sara Butler

Fitness doesn't have to be complicated. Sometimes the most effective ways to work out are simple -- such as walking or jogging. They are basic activities that can be done almost anywhere at any time to help you stay healthy and fit. All you need is a good pair of shoes and a route. Here are some tips to help you get the most from your walk, jog, or run by picking the perfect route.

A Scenic Route

Don't write off a walk or run with some pretty scenery. In fact, enjoying the environment you're walking or running in can make it more fun and inspire you to come back again. Some studies even suggest that simply being outside has benefits to your health.

Try looking for routes that include a lot of green space such as parks, the woods, or the countryside. If you live near a body of water or the beach, then try walking or jogging there too. If you don't have access to a lot of nature, cityscapes can be interesting as long as you choose low traffic roads to follow.

The Terrain

The best thing you can do to get the most from your walking/jogging routine is to challenge yourself with the terrain. Try to choose a route that has a variety of terrain, from flat, level ground to steep slopes, to gentle hills. You'll burn more calories and build more muscle by working harder with various terrain.

The Surface

One of the biggest contributors to injury through outdoor exercise is the surface chosen for walking and jogging. Try to avoid uneven ground such as loose gravel and mud. You also want to avoid very hard surfaces such as concrete or asphalt to help minimize your risk for injury as you walk. Pair this strategy with good shoes to offer support and cushioning and you'll be off to a great start.

Take a Break

Try to find a route that has possible places for you to stop to take water or rest breaks along the way. Some trails have water fountains or you can carry water with you and find some shade to take a rest for a few minutes as you hydrate. This is very important on days when it may be humid and hot, no matter your fitness level since you don't want to do too much and take a chance of making yourself sick.

Plan the best route and you will see results from your workouts!
