Why You Should Consider Veggies at Snack Time
By Genevieve Cunningham
Everyone loves a good snack. There's something about grabbing something quick and easy and popping it in your mouth that just feels so good. It's satisfying -- usually for both the body and mind. Unfortunately, our snacking habits can significantly affect our overall health, and poor snack choices negatively impact our weight, general health, and life. So what can we do? Choose vegetables! If your snacking habits aren't the healthiest, take a look at these reasons why you should consider choosing veggies for snack time every day.
They’re Low Calorie
Most vegetables are extremely low in calories. You can eat a serving or two or three, and you’ll likely still be under your allocated calories for that particular snack. This makes them an excellent choice for anyone who is watching their overall caloric intake. Just switch out your normal snack for a veggie, and you’ll have already made a significant dent.
They’re Nutritionally Dense
Vegetables are high in various vitamins and minerals, meaning that you’re getting powerful sustenance for your body with a simple snack. Depending on your particular choice, you may be getting a blast of Vitamins A, C, B, or K, magnesium, iron, phosphate, or various other nutrients. These are necessary for a healthy diet, and getting them through your snack just takes you one step closer to balance and better health.
You Can Eat a Lot
Because veggies are so low in calories, you can eat quite a few with very little consequence. This makes snacking feel better and more satisfying than ever. Fill up your plate or snack bag, and enjoy all day long. You’ll be able to eat snacks more often, and yet you’ll still be keeping your calories under control.
They Help Make Better Habits
Getting control of your snacking is one of the hardest parts about maintaining a good diet. Switching your normal snacks for vegetables might be difficult at first, but it can really set the tone for your overall health and nutrition plan. This one little step might help you begin and maintain healthier habits all the way around, and this ultimately leads to a healthier life and body for the long haul.
It might not be the most appealing choice, at least not in the beginning, but vegetables are an excellent option for snacks. Choose a few that you enjoy, and rotate them into your snacking menu. Making this one small change can significantly improve your diet and health from here on out.
