How to Fight Cravings and Lose Weight Instead

By Genevieve Cunningham

One of the hardest parts about losing weight is sticking to that healthy diet. It’s so green and light and healthy. Where’s all of the good stuff?! Where’s the sugar and caffeine and chocolate drizzled goodies? Unfortunately, in order to really lose weight and keep it off, you have to learn to think about the healthy stuff as the good stuff. But while you’re still fighting the battle, how do you fight off the cravings for all of the decadence? To give yourself a little push in the right direction, take a look at these tips for fighting cravings and losing weight instead.

Add Protein to Your Diet

Protein helps to build muscle and burn fat … you’ve probably heard this before. But protein is also known for its ability to curb cravings, especially for sweets and sugars. Adding protein to your diet is easy. Just grab some nuts, some quinoa, or add some lean meat to your meals and snacks. For the dedicated, you can even try a protein powder after your workout. The bottom line? More protein equals fewer cravings and greater potential for weight loss.

Eat Often

Another way to keep cravings far away is to simply not allow yourself to get hungry. Instead of pigging out on three big meals a day, try eating small meals or snacks six or seven times a day. Just keep in mind that these little eating breaks will be very small! This will keep your stomach full enough to give you the willpower to avoid binges should the desire to eat an entire chocolate cake come along.

Keep a Safe Distance

If you don’t want to eat bad foods, don’t buy them. It’s hard to binge on your favorite sweets if you simply don’t keep them in the house. Keep your distance from the foods that tempt you most. If it’s chips, don’t put them in the cabinet. If it’s fast food, take a different route home from work. Whatever you do, stay away, and you’ll have a much higher likelihood of beating the cravings long-term.

It’s really hard to lose weight, and it’s really hard to overhaul your diet. But you can do it! Use these tips to fight off those cravings and get your body and mind moving in the right direction. With a little help, you’ll forget about the overpriced, calorie-dense goodies and opt for the healthy treats that lead to weight loss and better health in no time.
