Food for Thought: 3 Foods That Boost the Mind

By Genevieve Cunningham

It seems as though there are foods made specifically for every part of the body. Want better eyes? Eat carrots. Looking to strengthen the muscles? Eat eggs. Need to protect the bones? Drink milk. But what about the brain? This is one of the most important parts of the body … the part that really makes us who we are. Luckily, there are foods that specifically strengthen this part of the body and enhance cognitive function. If you’re interested in boosting the health of your brain through diet, take a look at these delicious foods to add to the menu today.

Walnuts

Have you ever noticed that walnuts actually look like mini brains? Take it as a sign! Walnuts, because of their high concentration of omega-3 fatty acids, are a great food for the brain. This nutrient strengthens the synapses between brain cells. This manifests as improved memory, enhanced cognitive performance, and protection against age related cognitive decline. Just add a handful of walnuts to the menu every day, and you’ll have a delicious snack that boosts the brain.

Broccoli

Broccoli has two specific nutrients that might enhance brain function. The first is Vitamin K. Though this vitamin gets little attention, it’s a vitamin that can really enhance cognitive ability in adults. The second is a nutrient called choline. Choline has been linked to an improvement in memory. If you want a little boost in brain health, add broccoli as a side to dinner one or two nights a week.

Avocado

Here’s the things about avocado: It’s fatty. While this might sound like bad news, the fat in an avocado is a healthy fat. And the brain definitely needs healthy fats. It’s thought that this kind of fat, monounsaturated fat, promotes healthy blood flow, which is of big importance for the brain. If you were holding back on the avocado because of the fat, go ahead and eat it guilt-free to enhance brain function and health.

Just like any other part of the body, what you eat greatly affects the health and longevity of the brain. And this is a really important part of our body and our life! If you want to protect it and make it last, add these healthy foods to your diet. They’re delicious and brain empowering  for the perfect combination to a healthy menu.
