Tap Your Natural Resources for a Workout

By Tom Herrin

One of the great things about living in the Texas Hill Country is that there is some great scenery.  Because of that, there are some really great ways to exercise. For many people, there may not seem to be enough hours in any day to get the kind of workout they feel like they need.  Those living in the hill country are in luck. They may be able to do far more for less and save a lot of time. Walking up hills can be a really good way to get in a highly efficient workout without spending the usual amount of time.

It Can Strengthen Bones

A lot of people are concerned about problems with their bones.  It is for good reason. Osteoporosis and similar issues seem to be almost rampant today.  This is likely for a variety of reasons, from diet to exercise to who knows what else. One of the most effective ways to improve bone strength is believed to be through weight-bearing exercise.  For some people, this may create problems as well. Walking up hills can do the same thing. It causes the leg muscles to stretch and be taxed. Strengthening those leg muscles can also strengthen bones.

It Can Save Time

Since walking up hills can do more for less effort, it can also be done in less time.  Cutting a productive workout from 30 minutes or more to something like 15 or 20 minutes is pretty significant.  So many people get home with a minimum amount of time to spend working out that they often simply choose to forget it.  This can add up fast in the way of complacency. Failing to do something can allow everything a person has done getting into shape to be lost.

It Can Be Convenient

For those living in the hill country, walking up hills should require very little travel.  You don’t have to find that right place to exercise. There are probably significant hills a short distance away.  Whether it is a park or a neighborhood road with a sidewalk, you should be able to get a quality workout somewhere nearby without looking very hard.  This will probably provide more incentive for you to get out there. Remember that you are going for quality over quantity. Far too many times, I have put off a workout because I felt like I didn’t have enough time to get in a full session.  I finally realized that something was much better than nothing. In the case of hills, you have the resources to get in a full session in timely fashion.
