Give Your Toast a Toast!

By Donna Stark

I went out to dinner the other night with my family and we ordered a couple of bruschetta boards for our appetizer. They came out to our table and were so unique and pretty, but it got me thinking. If all of those different ingredients can be mixed together and taste so amazing on a piece of toast, can you imagine what you could do with that humble piece of buttered bread sitting next to your scrambled eggs in the morning? It’s time to put the jam and butter away and start creating exciting toppings for it. It’s time for your breakfast toast to shine!

Let Your Toast Live a Little

There are so many different combinations and exciting ingredients that can take the place of your toast’s usual butter and jelly, you just have to use your imagination and be a little creative. But don’t worry, you’re not replacing your humble piece of bread forever. After all, nothing can take the place of a delicious piece of warm, buttered toast on a cold day. But just for some added fun, here are some ideas to get you started on some new breakfast flavors.

  • Try a new nut butter - Peanuts and almonds aren’t the only nut butters that make a piece of toast taste good, so try some of the others. There are cashew, walnut, and pecan nut butters that taste amazing, and when topped with a bit of sea salt, honey, or maple syrup, the deliciousness level can’t be stopped!
  • Use real fruit - Jams and jellies can be loaded with sugar, so top your toast with fresh fruit instead. Start with a spread such as butter, nut butter, or ricotta cheese and top with a fruit that compliments it! You can try almond butter with cherries, ricotta with figs, or even just plain butter with sliced peaches on top!
  • Add to your basic avocado toast - Avocado toast is the trendiest and most versatile breakfast to eat right now. Try adding some cilantro, arugula, almonds and sunflower seeds on top for some extra flavor and texture. Or better yet, top it with a fried egg and some shredded chicken. You’d be amazed at some of the combinations that you can come up with!
  • Make it filling with meat - Sure, peanut butter used to make your toast super filling and provided your morning protein, but you certainly won’t miss it when you place a perfect piece of prosciutto or salmon on top instead. Spread some apricot jam before the prosciutto is added or some cream cheese before the salmon is placed on top, and watch how your toast is suddenly turned into a very filling and appetizing meal!

The Star of Breakfast

You’ve been creative with your pancakes, waffles, and eggs … now it’s time to let your toast shine! With a little creative thinking and some risk-taking with flavors, your toast could become the new star in your breakfast lineup. You may even end up posting some pics.
