It's Never Too Late for Healthy Habits

By Donna Stark

Doctor visits, prescription medications, physical activity ... the list of what it takes to maintain a senior's health could go on and on, couldn't it? Fortunately, for some people, their list is a little shorter than others because when they were younger, they engaged in healthy habits. But if that isn't you, don't you worry! As the saying goes, "It's never too late to start!" Good health habits can make a significant difference in anyone, at any time, even if you never made your overall wellness a priority. The important thing to remember is that you are willing to do so now. So, are you ready to start? Take a look at the following suggestions.

Watch What You Eat

Pay attention to the foods you are adding into your diet. The digestive muscles tend to slow down with age which can lead to many different types of digestive issues. It's important to consume high-fiber fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, heart-healthy fats, and plenty of water. You also want to avoid foods that are high in saturated fats, as they can increase the risk of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and serious heart conditions.

Stay Physically Active

Staying physically active is one of the best things a senior can do to stay healthy. Studies have shown that sedentary lifestyles can increase the risk of serious health issues, such as diabetes, depression, heart disease, cognitive decline, and certain cancers. If you are unsure of what to do, ask your primary care physician for some ideas, but you can always start with some simple stretching and a daily walk in the meantime.

Fill Your Social Calendar

Break the habit of spending all of your free time alone! Loneliness and isolation can have serious consequences to your overall health and well-being, so get busy and fill that social calendar of yours. Whether it's precious time with family and friends or time spent taking a class or volunteering, you couldn't ask for an easier way to start feeling better.

Focus on Prevention

In addition to seeing your doctors for preventive care, health screenings, and flu vaccines, you also want to make sure they are reviewing the medications you are taking regularly. Be sure to take note of how you feel after starting a new prescription and let your doctor know about any new symptoms or reactions you experience as soon as you can.

Establishing Healthy Habits

It's not an exaggeration when people say they feel like a new person once they get their health under control and start feeling better. It's true! And it can be true for you as well, so start today. Begin a new, healthier life and get ready to enjoy all of the wonderful years ahead of you.
