3 Signs You Should Stop Drinking Coffee

By Genevieve Cunningham

Coffee is the most popular morning drink, and that’s for good reason! Coffee tastes delicious, smells refreshing, and wakes us up like no other. And according to research, drinking coffee may also be healthy. But how do we know when it’s time to take a break from this stimulant? After all, it’s still an addictive and powerful substance. If you think you may be taking your coffee drinking a bit too far, take a look at these signs that it’s time to take a break.

You No Longer Feel Awake

It’s true that coffee can make us feel awake and alive. Some people get so used to drinking coffee, simply the smell can help them wake up. But if you’ve noticed that coffee no longer has this effect, it’s possible that you need a break. Your body and mind may have become accustomed to the caffeine, and now it no longer works. If this is you, don’t fret. A small break from your normal caffeine habit might allow your body to adjust back to normal, thus making the coffee effective once again.

You’re Having Digestive Issues

Coffee is hard on your digestive tract. It stimulates movement, and forces the digestive tract to get moving. In many cases, this doesn’t cause any problems at all. In other people, the effect on the digestive tract is so powerful, it can actually cause or exacerbate irritable bowel syndrome. If you’ve noticed that coffee causes your stomach to hurt or become tender, it’s probably time to back off and take a break to allow the irritation to go away.

You’ve Turned Into an All Day Drinker

There’s no reason to drink coffee all day. If you love the flavor and it doesn’t cause you any problems, great. But if you need the coffee to stay awake and function, it’s probably time to find another way. Your energy levels shouldn’t rely solely on caffeine, so if this is happening, you’ll need to readjust. Quit coffee, get some exercise, and give it some time. Once you get your energy levels back on track, you can resume coffee drinking, though hopefully in much smaller doses.

Coffee can be a great choice. It can bring some healthy benefits into your life, and it can certainly wake you up. But there are some negatives to this favorite drink. If any of these issues are popping up in your life, it might be time to take a quick break. Get your coffee drinking under control, and you should be able to enjoy the good and avoid the bad for a lifetime of delicious coffee drinking.
