How to Beat the Post-Holiday Fatigue

By Genevieve Cunningham

The holidays are so much fun. People everywhere, food galore, traditions, and memories that last a lifetime. It's great! But if we're being honest, the holidays are also exhausting. They drain us of any energy we may have stored away. The constant going, the eating, the dealing with relatives. It's enough to deplete the biggest holiday lover. Luckily, you don't have to turn down the holiday fun in order to save your energy. Instead, you can make a plan of action for the days just after the holidays. If you're curious how to gain back your energy after the holidays, take a look at these tips for beating the post holiday fatigue and getting back on track.

Get Extra Rest

This should go without saying, but we're going to say it anyway. You need to rest! Don't make big plans for a couple of days after the holidays. Use that time to slowly clean up the after-party mess and to rest as much as possible. Sleep in, go to bed early, and take naps. The more rest you get, the faster you're going to feel the pep return to your step.

Get Exercise

This might sound counterproductive, but it really works. Exercise is a great energy booster. Once your guests go home and the wrapping paper is in the trash, hit the gym. Get in a long walk or a good swim. This helps alleviate tension and stress, and it begins to re-energize your mind and muscles. It's also a great way to ease back into your fitness routine without waiting for the new year rush that's about to flood the gym with resolutions.

Resist the Extra Food

You indulged over the holidays, and that's completely OK. But if you want your energy back, it's time to resist. You don't have to diet, but you do have to cut back on the sweets and candies and heavy breads. These foods make us feel full, give us a temporary high, and then make us incredibly sleepy. It's time to get your diet back on track. Stick to fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and drink plenty of water. Over time, you'll notice your energy coming back; as a bonus, you may find the holiday pounds melting off as well.

Once the holidays are over, it's time to start a new plan. Use these tips to get your energy back and your health moving in the right direction. With a little push, some discipline, and some persistence, you'll be feeling like your old self with better health in no time at all.
