Sleep: Make It Work and Boost Your Health
By Genevieve Cunningham
Getting a good night's sleep feels so good. It's refreshing. When you sleep well, you wake up in a much better mood with a little pep in your step. Unfortunately, most people aren't getting good sleep on a regular basis. For whatever reason, we've become a society that almost celebrates and rewards more work and less sleep. And it's definitely showing up in our overall mental and physical wellness. In order to feel and function your best, you have to make sleep a priority. How? If you're interested in getting more (and better!) sleep in your life, take a look at these tips to make sleep work for you.
Get Disciplined
People who get good sleep are disciplined about it. They're proactive. They set a bedtime, and then they actually stick to it. They turn down plans that are too late in the night. They go through a routine that winds them down and helps them relax. If you want better sleep, you have to make it an actual priority. Make the decision to get disciplined, and your chances of good sleep go way up.
Get Comfortable
Are you comfortable at night? Like really, really comfortable? If not, it's time to make some changes. You should have a mattress and pillow combination that provides both support and comfort. Your room should be at a comfortable temperature. Your clothes should be comfortable -- not too loose or too restrictive. Getting comfortable can be a challenge, but the more comfortable your sleeping space and your body, the better sleep you're going to get on a consistent basis.
Get Help
Sometimes there's more to it than simple inability to fall asleep. Sometimes we need professional help. Have you talked to your doctor? If you've tried everything and still can't sleep, maybe it's time. Maybe you should try a month of massages, or maybe you should see your chiropractor for regular adjustments. Healthcare professionals are there for a reason -- to help! If you can't sleep, don't be afraid to reach out and get the help you need.
Sleep is important. It's what fuels us and keeps us moving. It's what keeps our minds clear and our moods up. If you're not getting enough sleep, you need to make some changes and re-prioritize. Use these tips to improve your sleep, and you may find a serious boost in your health and well-being in no time at all.
