Things You May Not Know About Exercise

By Paul Rothbart

Most people know that exercise is important for good health. Many work out regularly and some have a regimen that has been successful for them. For those who have that exercise routine, things are going well. But for people who have not been able to find the time or energy to get much-needed exercise, there are things they may not know that can be helpful. Even those who do work out may be able to learn something new.

Eating Before of After Exercise Depends on Your Goals

One question some people may have is should they eat before or after their workout. The answer is dependent on what their fitness goals are. People who are trying to lose weight are better served by eating after exercise. By working out on an empty stomach, the body will be forced to burn its fat stores for energy. Just be mindful if you get lightheaded or dizzy. In that case, eat a light snack. If you train with high intensity, you want to eat before working out so your body has the fuel it needs to complete the training session. No matter when you choose to eat, stay hydrated. You should drink water before, after, and during exercise.

Change Your Routine Occasionally

It's great to find a routine that works for you. It becomes comfortable and easier to stick to. However, you may find yourself hitting a plateau after several months. The body becomes more efficient at performing your routine and doesn't have to work as hard, so progress can stop. Changing your routine every 2-3 months, especially if you increase the intensity will keep your body working hard and you can continue to make fitness progress.

Exercising to Music Can Help

Effective exercise often relies on setting a good pace. You don't want to drag your routine out. It can take more time than you have available, causing you to cut it short, and it may not work your body sufficiently to make significant progress. Listening to music while training is a great way to maintain a good pace and motivate yourself. Choose something upbeat that matches how fast you want to train. Music can also help distract you from fatigue and help you make it to the end.

It's pretty much universally known that exercise is part of staying healthy. But there may be facts about working out that you are not aware of. The more you learn about anything, the better you can utilize it. Take your new knowledge and use it to help you reach your fitness goals.
