Does Music Inspire You Or Annoy You?

By Tom Herrin

Music has a unique effect on people.  Some people just feel inconvenienced by having it on.  They feel like it is interfering with their concentration.  Still, many others find music to be motivating, reminding them of familiar themes or memories.  These could be very fond or very painful.  Music has that ability to set a tone and affect our mood.  It can be used to make us more productive and less distracted from our tasks.  Sometimes we don’t even notice its presence when it is used as a background for our regular activities.

Music Can Drive Us

How many workouts are accompanied by music today?  I would say almost all of them.  Those higher intensity workouts are often done to music with a faster and more aggressive beat and sound.  On the other hand, many of the meditative activities are paired with slower, more subtle sounds.  Carefully choosing the type of music we listen to can make the difference in progression or regression in whatever we are trying to achieve.

Music Can Relax Us

It is a given that many people use music to relax.  We can take this a step more by really looking closely at the kind of music available.  Earth sounds like wind, water, etc., are great for deep relaxation.  This kind of music can aid in going into a deeper sleep and having the ability to rest when you may have had problems.  Some people enjoy jazz for just slowing down the pace and trying to forget the everyday distractions we all have.  Most of us have some kind of music that bring back fond memories of childhood, dating, experiences shared with family members, etc.  This can often stir powerful emotions.

Music Can Improve Body Function

It is thought that music can have real effects on the way our body works.  There are studies about the way certain beats affect our brain.  It is also believed that music can open airways, increase or decrease heart rate, and affect our breathing among other things.  We know that for years some music has been used for armies while marching.  This would support the belief that music can improve muscle coordination and function.  So why not tune in to some music that can make a difference?  It may provide just the inspiration you need to succeed.
