Leaving Out Carbs May Be a Big Mistake

By Tom Herrin

Maintaining good health is often a matter of making good choices.  Knowing what to include and what to leave out can be an important part of this.  Staying informed is not something people can take lightly.  If they don't know what their bodies need and how it uses foods, their decisions may be based on misconceptions that can lead them the wrong direction.  It is fortunate that many people have good resources they can use to base their ideas of nutrition on.  While recent trends have focused on cutting carbs, many people have made bad dietary choices because they have not gathered enough information.

Bad Carbs Have Not Changed

For years, most people have been told what kinds of carbs they need to avoid.  It may not have been spelled out that way, but they were told to avoid them anyway.  Pretty much anyone knows they should watch how much sugar they consume.  Carbs from sugar can cause some real health issues.  Some suggestions have been that women avoid taking in more than 100 calories per day from carbs from sugar and that men keep their intake to no more than 150 calories per day.

Healthy Carbs Are Still the Same

No matter what kind of trends people follow, good carbs are just that.  For years, people have been told to eat more fruits, vegetables, and healthy grains.  This can help to fuel the body and keep the muscles in shape and good working order,  when they have an insufficient amount of carbs, the muscles may begin to be used as a substitute fuel.  When this happens, people may lose lean muscle mass.  In cases of starvation, whether it is with people or animals, these instances of metabolizing muscle can be bad.

Create Your Own Healthy Body

We each have the ability to make the healthiest body possible.  Increasing our knowledge about nutrition can never hurt.  We can always make better decisions when we are well informed.  Planning is always helpful.  I sometimes miss, but I try my best to be as informed as possible about good choices in what to eat.  It may take a little planning, but it is worth it.  It is best to avoid some new plan that may be out there just because it sounds good.  Knowledge can be a great tool.  The more of it we have, the better off we will be.
