Safe Exercise Is Best

By Tom Herrin

Making the decision to become fit is something that many people do at some point or another.  Whether or not they actually follow through with their decision is another thing.  Once they make that decision and take action, one of the most critical things to do for their success is to be sure to perform their activities without doing anything that slows down their progress.  One of the big thorns that may occur in their side is injury.  Anytime someone receives an injury, it may slow down whatever progress they have made and, possibly, reverse it for a time.  Finding ways to protect against them can help to avoid this problem and serve as a boost to their program.

Don't Walk Too Many Miles in Old Shoes

A lot of people are creatures of habit and pretty set in their ways.  The idea of wearing something comfortable is good, but when it comes to shoes, that comfort may be short-lived.  Many have a favorite pair of shoes they wear whenever they are doing anything casual.  If they are being really active, it may become  a problem.  Constant stress on the feet can wear out shoes without a person realizing it has happened.  Once the cushion and support are shot, injuries may occur.  They can be especially hard on the feet and joints.  It is often suggested that active people replace shoes about every six months as a precaution.

Start Slowly

Even though an individual may have dreams of building some great muscles, it does not happen overnight.  For those beginning a new routine, it is much better advice to start with a minimal amount of weight, or maybe none at all.  Doing an exercise to get down the form correctly should be done with little or no stress.  Adding more stress a little bit at a time can help to prevent strain or other injury.  Doing too much too soon is asking for trouble, and the individual is likely to be disappointed by having to start over after taking some kind of break to recover.

Keep in Mind Your Goal

The end result is generally the most important part of any plan.  Keeping that goal in mind as we get into our workout is a critical part of our success.  If we will make good health our highest priority, we will be good with the notion of taking it easy and slowly increasing our efforts.  Considering all of the possibilities is essential.  If we can't afford new shoes every six months, then running is not something that should be a major part of our program.  Think it out, make it work for you.
