Your Health May Be Protected by a Vaccine
By Tom Herrin
As time has passed and people all over the world have been shaken in 2020, most have anxiously awaited news that would be encouraging. For many, there has been little to feel good about. We have had to change the way we live and interact with one another. The things we once did as a part of our traditions have been altered in lots of ways. We may now zoom where we once gathered. The best news in all of this may be that many vaccines have been developed. Those that have been more successful in trials are being rolled out for use. Those at the front of that line are now feeling hope. The rest of the general population will have some important choices to make in the coming months. The sooner we are able to make a decision as to where we stand, the better off we will be.
Vaccines May Save Us
There is little doubt about the value of vaccines in general. The smallpox vaccine was simple but pretty effective. Following its development, researchers worked to open the possibilities for others. The tetanus vaccine made a huge difference in wartime. It saved many lives. It is now combined with the vaccine for diphtheria and whooping cough (pertussis) as part of a routine program. Following that, the MMR vaccine covered many other diseases. Rubella was a common illness that was mild in most people but caused many birth defects. If this light, the new vaccine could be invaluable.
Vaccines May Threaten Us
Even with the success of many vaccines, some problems have put a dark cloud over them. People with problems with their immune systems, vaccines can have serious effects. Some common reactions have been fever, pain, muscle weakness, and fatigue. Some more serious issues have been loss of memory, problems with hearing or vision, seizures, and a few others. Some past bad experience of a family member may be a reason to pause.
Look at All the Options
Now is the time for us to begin the process of making a choice of whether or not we will take a vaccine. As these new ones are made available to healthcare workers and others early, they will be offered to the rest of us in a few short months. Waiting until the last minute to decide may not be the best. Considering all of the options now may help us be able to make a choice we can live with.
