Quick and Simple Ways to Boost Metabolism
By Sandy Schroeder
As the holidays loom, we are all looking for ways to boost our metabolism and hold the line on calories.
WellandGood.com tackled this subject recently, pointing out some simple ways to push the metabolism button.
Show up for a hearty breakfast - Make sure it is loaded with protein to propel your metabolism throughout the day. Make smart protein choices such as eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese or lean meats. Your body burns more calories digesting protein than fat or carbs, and it will keep you feeling full longer. If your appetite is slow to wake up in the morning, it's OK to wait a half hour or more to fuel up.
Make caffeine work for you - Most of us count on morning coffee to wake us up, but the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition says coffee's caffeine dose can spike our metabolic rate by 11 percent. While you are at it, you can add black or green tea that also provide antioxidants that can help break down fat.
Exercise early - And make it high intensity if you can. You will burn more fat and gain even more momentum if you alternate routines such as sprinting and jogging. Whatever you do, keep a daily fitness routine in your schedule to jog your metabolism.
Use resistance training - Try to mix high intensity sprints or running with strength training to burn more calories.
Sleep well - Keep the body primed with 7 to 9 hours of rest every night. Set a regular bedtime and shut down electronics at least two hours before bedtime. Also skip alcohol, spicy foods and stimulating shows right before bedtime. Create a soothing ritual instead with a warm bath, soft music or relaxing stretches.
Stay hydrated - Drink lots of cold water and carry a canister of water wherever you go. Keep one on your desk and tuck one in your tote when you are out running errands.
Spice up your meals - Add your favorite peppers to your lunches and dinner to stimulate your metabolism.
Never sit when you can stand - Add 10-minute breaks to each hour that you sit at work, and fit in morning and afternoon walking breaks to underscore your metabolism and give your back a break.
Snack smart - Keep your metabolism moving with healthy fruit, cheese and cracker snacks every 3-4 hours.
As always, check in with your doctor before beginning new fitness routines or changing diets.
