Expressing Yourself Can Bring Relief from Stress

By Tom Herrin

These are stressful days.  Everywhere we turn, we keep things bottled up.  Jobs, school, finances, the whole nine yards add up to stresses we really don’t need.  All too often, we don’t allow ourselves any real outlets from this constant compression of life.  Perhaps there are some pursuits that are long lost to you that would be worth revisiting for the benefit of your health.  Many of the various arts can be fulfilling, thought provoking, and stress relievers.  If you have ever had an interest in creating poetry, art, or photography, now might be a good time to look at it again.

Part Time Can Be Good Time

I know people who have the feeling that if they can’t do something full time, they don’t want to do it at all.  Finding stress relief through personal expression is a great way to add balance to our lives.  Some of those things we do two or three hours per week can provide that outlet that frees our spirit.  It gives us something to look forward to, coloring the boredom of the routine work rush that accompanies it.  We can gain a new perspective in our thinking.  We tend to get ourselves in a box all too many times, causing us to limit our problem solving to a repeat of the same old line of thought.

Just How Creative Can You Get?

Creativity is like a seed, if you cultivate it correctly, it can flourish.  You may surprise yourself at just what you can do.  People who are into photography are a good example.  Many times they start out taking pictures of scenes or objects.  Before long, they begin to see much more in the picture.  They begin to experiment with ways to enhance certain things and obscure others.  The art of photography blossoms, and the creative thought takes off.

What If I Can’t Get Going?

Most communities have some kind of outlets for those interested in various kinds of arts.  Classes may be available to get you started.  There will be people who can be resources for you.  It won’t take long until you find something that is your niche.  All you have to do is look them up and give them a try.  Remember that your goal is to get some good stress relief.  It will be well worth your effort to explore what’s out there.  The first thing you try might not be your thing.  Then try again.  The one who has the most to gain from it is you, so get out there and express yourself.
