Learning to Eat Different Foods Can Improve Health

By Tom Herrin

Many times, the health issues people experience can be attributed in part to the foods they eat.  High fat, high starch fast foods can cause some problems that don’t just go away on their own. Many people carry health issues with them that are not reversible.  Making better choices in their diets can be a tremendous help. One of the foods that some people try hard to avoid but can go a long way to promote better health is peas.  Some people just don’t like anything green while others don’t like the sound of it. I refused to eat a pea salad that my mother made for years. One day I decided to try it, and I found that it was actually pretty good.

They May Help Cholesterol Problems

It seems that more and more people are afflicted with cholesterol problems.  This is no doubt a result of too many bad choices in foods. If people feel they are in need of protein, peas are a good source.  They are high in both protein and fiber. In addition, they contain niacin, which may help to lower triglycerides and bad cholesterol.  They are also believed to help boost good cholesterol.

They May Support Disease-Fighting Abilities

Peas contain antioxidants which are known to help in preventing many kinds of diseases.  They are critical in maintaining healthy hearts and blood vessels, and limiting the buildup of plaque.  They also contain several of the B vitamins that can help to reduce the homocysteine levels that are known to contribute to heart disease.

They May Help with Weight Management

The protein content already mentioned can help to keep people feeling fuller longer.  The high fiber helps this also. Once this is combined with the fact that peas are low in calories, they can be a great addition to meals.  If you haven’t acquired a taste for them, you may want to try them a different way. There are actually plenty of ways to eat peas. I sometimes enjoy eating them right out of a can.  They can be good warm or cold, but give them a fair chance. They are a small thing that can make a big difference in your health. Add the pea to your diet on a regular basis and do a self-check in a month or so.  You may be surprised at what they can do.
