You May the Wrong Idea About Fat

By Tom Herrin

Most of us have some kind of perception about fat.  First of all, we think in terms of our appearance.  When we look in the mirror, we see something.  It is not always what we think, but it may be what we either fear or strive for.  If we are a little insecure, we may think we see fat in some places as a bad thing.  If we are pretty confident, we may overlook things that actually don't look so flattering.  We all have fat, but it is not always a bad thing.  On the good side, fat is what may help to provide some of the smoother parts of our shape that we may prefer.  Fat that lies under our skin is called subcutaneous fat.  It truly does give our shape.  When we have more than we should, it is noticeable and may be bad.

Fat Is Necessary for Some Things

Our bodies require some fat.  The brain, for instance, needs fat in order to function as it should.  Without an adequate amount of it, the brain contains useful fat that keeps it healthy.  Fat is also necessary for bone marrow, nerves, and some of the organs as it may help to protect some of them.

Fat Performs Other Useful Functions

We all have some good uses for fats.  It is important in helping to regulate our body temperature.  It also stores some vitamins.  It may help to keep hormones in balance.  Additionally fat may help to regulate hormones, maintain metabolism, and keep blood sugar in check.  A lot of the time, when we see fat, we have no idea of the benefits it provides.

There Is Another Side to Fat

In the past few years, there has been a lot of attention given to belly fat.  This is visceral fat, a type of white fat that is obvious when it accumulates at the belly.  It is considered to be a pretty dangerous fat and can cause serious harm.  It can contribute to strokes and high blood pressure.  It also may damage the heart and cause some types of cancer.  If we have much of it, we need to address the issue.  Those who have an excess of belly fat have some pretty high risks to their health, so it is important to manage it.
