Driving Discomfort? Seek a Chiropractor's Advice

By Brandi Goodman

Driving can be a relaxing pastime for some. On nice days, in particular, it can be exhilarating to drive down the open road with the windows down and the sun shining. That doesn't mean the activity doesn't have its downfalls. Driving discomfort is quite common, especially if you're behind the wheel for an extended timeframe. Advice from the chiropractor can help you keep your driving routine ideal and free from pain.

Support Your Lower Back

Your lower back and hips may experience the most discomfort while you drive. Keep your lower back supported so the area does not take all the damage. You can do so by keeping a lumbar support pillow behind you. Even a rolled-up towel can help if you don't have an actual lumbar support device available.

Adjust Your Seat Properly

Your posture can have a lot to do with why you're hurting after a drive. You need to be sure you're adjusting your seat properly so you're sitting upright and remaining in the correct position in your vehicle. You don't want your seat too far back from the steering wheel. It will force you to lean forward and reach out. Instead, you should be adequately spaced from it so you have room yet can still hold the wheel with ease. Your elbows should be bent slightly and not straight out.

Use Cruise Control

Cruise control was added to vehicles for a reason. If you have the feature, use it any time you're able. You no longer have to keep your foot on the gas pedal when your car is cruising along on its own at the set speed. It gives you time to stretch your legs a bit and rest both feet on the floor before returning to manual operation.

Employ Seat Heat

Many vehicles have a heated seat feature. Employ this feature if you want to get some relief. Heat can help to loosen muscles and help you feel relaxed. It's a great option if your body is tense, either from cold weather or pain.

Follow the chiropractor's advice when it comes to driving so you can get to your destination pain-free. You need to be able to focus on the road. Having an aching pain is only going to distract you. Stop in at The Joint Chiropractic for a chance to get an assessment and adjustment that can ease any tension you already have. It can make driving more delightful going forward.
