Bottom, Middle, Top: Back Pain and Getting Relief

By Genevieve Cunningham

Back pain comes in all forms and severities. Sometimes it’s only in our lower back, but it’s mild enough to be tolerable. Sometimes it’s all over, and it’s so fierce we can barely function. And sometimes it changes from day to day. The one thing that all of these have in common? Most people are dying to find a way to get relief. If you suffer from back pain, check out these common causes as well as some tips for finding a bit of relief from the discomfort.

When the Pain is at the Bottom

It seems that this is the most common type of pain, or at least the most heavily complained about. Why? Because we tend to cause injury to this area a lot. This part of our back often gets overworked or misused, which then leads to the pain. We lift wrong, strain it during exercise, or twist at the wrong angle. It’s also an incredibly difficult part of the body to strengthen, which keeps it more susceptible to discomfort. Try buying low back support devices such as braces for exercise and pillows for the car, and always practice proper lifting techniques to protect this area from strain.

When the Middle of the Back Hurts

The middle of the back gets fewer complaints than down low. It’s a bit easier to strengthen, and it’s used in a more balanced capacity than our lower back. When this area of the back is in pain, it could indicate that we have simply overworked it and it needs rest, or it could indicate injury. Pay attention to the type of pain that comes from this area -- soreness, aching, shooting pains -- and then take that information to your doctor to find a cure. It can also be helpful to strengthen this part of the back with consistent exercise and weights.

When the Pain is at the Top

This is probably the area of the back that is complained about the least. The top of the back lies between the shoulder blades, and when it is in pain, it almost always needs some help. While it may occasionally be cured with some rest of those muscles, the upper back generally hurts if it is unhealthy or injured. It also radiates into the neck in many instances. Try stocking up on neck support devices to help support this area, and stick to an exercise routine that includes strengthening moves for this area.

A Plan to Treat Them All
