You have control in your kitchen. You decide the portion sizes and the ingredients that go into your food. But what happens when you decide to take a break from cooking? Can you still eat healthy at a restaurant?
You can skip the anxiety that sometimes follows you to a restaurant when you are trying to maintain a balanced diet by doing some research and thinking ahead. Read on for some tips to help you make healthy food choices while dining out.
Eat Throughout the Day
If you arrive at your dinner stop famished, you are more likely to overeat and choose unhealthy food options. Eating a meal or snack every 4-5 hours will keep your hunger in check throughout the day.
Review the Menu
If you have a lunch or dinner restaurant in mind, you can read the menu in advance. This will give you more time to consider your options and to know what you want before you arrive.
Pay Attention to Language
Knowing phrases that mean high-calorie will help you make healthier choices. Foods that are deep-fried, cream-based, or buttery will give you more calories. Look for grilled, roasted, or seasoned foods to give yourself more breathing room on the calorie intake.
Rethink Your Drink
It is very easy to consume lots of calories by drinking before you even start eating. Multiple sodas and sugary cocktails can put you well over your calorie goal and the recommended sugar daily amount.
If you enjoy a drink like this occasionally, you can balance it out with healthier food options. However, routinely consuming sugary drinks can lead to health problems. Too much sugar has been linked to heart disease, memory problems, vision disorders, and skin concerns.

Restaurant portions are often way more than we need in one meal. Listen to your body's hunger cues. Ask for a to-go box so you can have lunch or dinner for the next day.
Make Special Requests
Don't be afraid to customize your meal. You can ask for no butter or oil. Ask for dressings on the side so you can decide how much to add to your salad. Substitute fries with steamed veggies or a side salad.
