Chiropractic Protects the Neck and Helps Solve Pain
By Sandy Schroeder
Much of what we do is automatic. We are busy and moving quickly. But pain gets our attention. Our constant use of phones and computers make our necks especially vulnerable. Each time the head moves forward 10 degrees, the weight on the neck increases 10 pounds. Poor posture, stress, and extended sitting can create painful imbalances in neck muscles.
To evaluate your neck pain and learn ways to protect your neck, stop by The Joint Chiropractic clinic near you. The Joint’s doctors of chiropractic help people of all ages seek pain relief and wellness without pain medications or surgery.

Your chiropractor may use a gentle, targeted spinal adjustment to reduce dysfunction, creating pain relief and a new sense of well-being. Many people report new energy, more alertness, and better sleep.
As you evaluate the results of your adjustment, you may choose to do weekly 15-minute adjustments to keep the benefits coming. Many people are inspired to upgrade their health with more activities, healthier diets, and new tactics to reduce stress.
You can also take simple steps such as these from Harvard Health to avoid future neck pain.
Center yourself – Keep the neck directly over the spine, not leaning forward.
Workplace check – Sit up straight with shoulders down and back, computer monitor at eye level, and feet flat on the floor.
Reduce stress – Use stretches, yoga or tai chi to reduce stress that can tighten neck muscles.
Time out to stretch – Take breaks on the hour and gently stretch the neck up and down or side to side.
Avoid long fixed positions – Take breaks while watching TV, reading, or using phones and tablets. Keep screens at eye level.
Phone leaning – Avoid tilting the head to one side, which puts additional strain on the neck muscles.
Stretch Tight Neck Muscles
To preserve your range of motion and lessen tension in the neck muscles, do daily stretches like this one.
Sit up straight. Face forward. Slowly turn your head to one side. Hold for three seconds and face forward. Then turn slowly to the other side and hold for three seconds. Return to front position. Repeat 10 times.
