3 Basics of Clean Eating to Help You Get Started
By Genevieve Cunningham
Clean eating. If you’re even mildly interested in the world of health and fitness, you’ve definitely heard of this phrase. It’s often thrown around when people want to lose weight or tone up a bit. Just eat clean, they say. It works every time, they say. But unless you understand more than “just eat clean,” it won’t work. What does “clean eating” really mean? And how do you implement it? If you’re interested in the concept of clean eating, take a look at these three basics to help you get started.
Always Choose Veggies
Vegetables are king in almost every diet, and clean eating is no exception. While many clean eating gurus will steer you toward organic only veggies, it’s completely OK to get started with regular old veggies at your grocery store. When you have the choice, choose vegetables … as a side, as a snack, etc. It’s an excellent and super easy way to move toward clean eating with very little effort.
Say No to Boxed Meals
It’s not that every single boxed meal out there is terrible, but most of them are going to be overly processed, and this is a no-no in the world of clean eating. When possible, just say no to boxed meals. Instead, buy the ingredients fresh and cook up a delicious meal. Though this might take a little effort, it usually tastes better and is definitely better for your diet than the prepackaged options.
The Fewer Ingredients, the Better
Most advocates of clean eating agree on this. Though it won’t be true absolutely 100 percent of the time, it’s true most of the time. Clean foods have fewer preservatives and additives. If you’re looking at a recipe, and it calls for only a few ingredients (and you can name them all!), you’re probably on the right track. As you get deeper into clean eating, you’ll be able to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy recipes with just a quick glance.
Clean eating is a great way to get moving toward better health and the body you love. But unless you already know where to begin, it can be tough to figure out how to go about it in the beginning. Use these basic tips to get you moving, and you’ll have the healthiest diet on the block in no time at all.
