Secrets to Transform Your Mood

By Sara Butler

Most people think of happiness as a destination. It’s someplace you get to when you finally have the job you want, the car of your dreams, or that Walt Disney World vacation you’ve been planning for roughly 485 days. The problem is, happiness isn’t somewhere you go, it’s something you feel. And because of that, it’s a way of thinking. Here are a few ways you can train yourself to be happier and transform your mood, no matter what car you’re driving or what vacation you’re not currently on!

Learn to be Grateful

Many studies have found that feeling grateful for what you have simply makes you feel better. If you’re going through a difficult time, then this can be one thing that totally turns your whole world around. You have to look at the things in your life you’re grateful for, no matter how small. It can be a great cup of coffee in the morning, a smile from a stranger on the street, or a positive comment from your boss. Write down three things you’re grateful for each day and see how it impacts your mood.

Be Thankful

You have to learn to give thanks more often than just on Thanksgiving. Being thankful is about recognizing all the good things you have in your life and feeling good about them. Being thankful for the things in your life will help to put you in the frame of mind to notice the small things you may have missed otherwise, which then opens up the world for you to see just how rich life is!

Take a Deep Breath

If you’re having a rough day, then the best thing to do is take a step back and breathe deep. Taking a few deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth can actually activate the parts of your brain that help you feel calm and happy.

No matter how busy or hectic your day, take a moment to pause and reflect. Instead of just rushing from one thing to the next, stop and take notice of something beautiful. Or take a deep breath and feel the calm wash over your body. Taking small breaks, even just a minute, to pause and re-center yourself can have a very positive impact on your mindset throughout the day.

Happiness is a state of mind, so take your mind there through thoughtful, mindful practices like these!
