The Myths of Back Pain

By Sara Butler

Back pain is so common that the ideas surround it have taken on a life of their own. There's a lot of information out there, so much so that half of all adults who admit to having back pain each year probably don't know truth from myth. Let the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic help you understand more about back pain by helping you understand the real deal behind these back pain myths.

Myth No. 1: Having Back Pain is Just a Part of Getting Older

You may think that the twinges you experience here and there is simply a sign that your body is wearing out as you add more birthday candles to your cake each year, but that's not necessarily true. While your body does change as you get older, there is nothing normal about pain.

There are steps you can actively take to keep your body healthy as you age. One of these things is regular visits to the chiropractor. They can help you keep your joints working as they should and also give you some advice on other habits you may want to change, such as exercise and diet, as you age.

Myth No. 2: If You're Active, Then You Don't Need to Worry About Back Pain

Of course, staying fit is one of the best things you can do as you get older to keep your spine healthy and your back pain-free, but it's not the only thing. There's simply no way to guarantee that you won't experience back pain no matter what you do. But, if you work with your chiropractor to address joint dysfunctions and restrictions, exercise regularly, and eat right, then you're doing your part to help reduce your chances!

Myth No. 3: If You're Not Having a Ton of Pain, Then It's Not Too Bad

Pain is not a great thing to judge the severity of a condition off of. Sometimes, feeling the full extent of an injury won't be obvious for days, weeks, or sometimes even months. If you're noticing a mild ache or a twinge of pain that won't go away, then it's important to have it checked out by a chiropractor.

Myth No. 4: If You Have Back Pain, Then You Need Surgery

While it may be true that back pain is common, surgery to fix the problem is not common. It's important that you try everything you can to address your injury or condition in the most natural, non-invasive way first. Surgery should always be the last option -- and chiropractic your first!

If you have questions about the health of your back or your back pain, then the chiropractors at The Joint are a great resource!
