Can Chiropractic Help Osteoporosis?

By Paul Rothbart

Structure is important to many things, both living and inanimate. In humans, our skeleton is the structure. It gives us our shape and supports every other tissue in the body. It's pretty vital. Try hailing a cab without a skeleton. But bones, like any other tissue are susceptible to disease. Bone diseases exist and one of the most common is osteoporosis. About 54 million Americans suffer from this bone disease. Research shows that 1 in 2 women and 1 in 4 men over 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis.

Causes of Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a loss of bone density caused by too much bone loss, too little bone growth, or both. Bone is a living tissue that constantly changes. In a healthy person, bone density is maintained, but for those with osteoporosis, it is reduced, making the person more susceptible to fractures and breaks. New bone is created much faster in younger people, therefore those over 50 are at greater risk. Osteoporosis also tends to be hereditary so knowing family medical history is important. A dietary deficiency of minerals such as calcium and Vitamins B12 and D, which are used to build bone can also be a cause. Some medical conditions and diseases can also cause osteoporosis.

Preventative Measures

Early diagnosis of osteoporosis is extremely important to treating it successfully. There is no way to change factors such as age and gender, but there are things you can do to help prevent this disease. Diet is the most important. Make sure to get the recommended daily allowance of calcium. Eat foods that contain this mineral and take a supplement if necessary. Getting sufficient amounts of Vitamin D is also important. The skin makes this mineral from sunshine, so try to get outside for a while each day. Vitamin D is also present in some foods and is added to milk. A supplement is also a good way to ensure you get the recommended daily allowance.

How Chiropractic Care May Help

Chiropractic adjustments align the spine and joints and in doing so may stimulate the cells that create new bone mass. Seeing a chiropractor improves the range of motion of joints and may increase the bone density of those same joints. Regular adjustments may help prevent osteoporosis and may aid the healing process in those who have it. A chiropractor will use modified adjustment techniques for those with weakened bones.

Osteoporosis is common and serious. Broken bones are painful and costly in that they force us to take time off of work. A good diet with proper nutrition can help prevent and reverse this condition. Regular chiropractic treatments may also help in fighting osteoporosis. Stop by The Joint Chiropractic to see what a licensed chiropractor could do for you.
