5 Chiropractic Tips for Every Griller

By Brandi Goodman

The summer season is heavily composed of grilled foods. Lots of people take to the outdoors to stand in front of their grill and serve up some smoked meat for dinner. The activity can be quite hard on your back, though. Every griller should keep some chiropractic tips in mind so they can continue their favorite method of cooking sans back pain.

Use a Mat

Standing on the hard surface of your deck or patio will quickly leave your lower body feeling fatigued and sore. You should use a mat that helps absorb some of the shock and keeps your feet, legs, and lower back feeling good for the duration of your cooking. Either drag out a mat you have inside or buy an anti-fatigue mat for the outdoors that you can keep for all your grilling purposes.

Wear Supportive Shoes

Shoes matter even when you're just standing. Wearing a pair of flats will do nothing to help offer comfort or support. You need a pair of athletic, supportive shoes that help to add some cushion to your feet and dissipate the discomfort.

Take Breaks

You may have to babysit the food on the grill to be sure it doesn't burn, but that doesn't mean you have to stand at attention the entire time. Take a seat and get a break when you can so you don't put too much pressure on your back and body.

Stretch Regularly

Standing for long intervals can be tough on your lower body and back especially. Be sure you're stretching regularly while you wait for the food to cook. Standing stiffly will only lead to pain, but stretching out your muscles and joints can help to keep your body as limber as possible.

Choose Your Grill Based on Height

Most grills don't have the option for height adjustments. That means whoever will be using the grill most needs to choose an option that meets their height from the beginning. You should be able to stand with proper posture while you're grilling so you don't have an aching back from hunching over a too-low version.

Your grilling season can occur without pain as long as you keep these tips in mind. Enjoy your time outdoors smoking meats, veggies, and whatever else you like. If you still experience discomfort, you can always head to your local chiropractor at The Joint for an assessment.
