Bike Safely Using Chiropractic Advice

Biking is a common activity throughout the spring, summer, and fall months. Some even opt for bike riding during the winter as an exercise opportunity and mode of cheap transportation. If you've ridden a bike before, you know the seat can be rather uncomfortable and your back can hurt after a while. That doesn't have to be the case, though. With some chiropractic advice in mind, you can bike safely no matter the season or reason for your ride.

Buy an Appropriately Sized Bike

The size of your bike has a lot of bearing on whether or not you're experiencing aches after a ride. Try to ride a bike that's far too small and you're bound to be hunched over and sitting uncomfortably. Ride a bike that's too big and you're likely to struggle to reach the pedals or handlebars. You need a bike that fits your height and weight appropriately so you can sit with your back straight and avoid using improper posture.

Get a Cushioned Seat

The seat may be the culprit of your pain on many occasions. A hard seat that doesn't fit well between your thighs can make it uncomfortable to ride. You may even find yourself sitting to one side or slouching more because you're trying to avoid the discomfort. Get a cushioned seat that fits your body well so you aren't feeling uncomfortable on your bike. It will make for a smoother ride.

Wear Athletic Shoes While You Ride

A pair of flat shoes, sandals, or even bulky boots will all make it difficult to pedal well. This may lead to pain in your feet and legs, and cause you to sit or stand differently than you should to avoid the discomfort. You should wear a sturdy pair of athletic shoes that feel comfortable against the pedal and are meant for biking. 

Stretch Before, During, and After

Stretching out your body is beneficial no matter the activity. Always make sure to at least stretch before you get on your bike. It can help keep your joints limber and make the ride easier to handle. It's also wise to stop and stretch during the ride -- especially if it's a long one. Stretch again once you're at your destination so can recover promptly and avoid feeling any aches.

Biking can be done safely and free from pain when you keep chiropractic advice in mind. The favorite activity for many doesn't have to leave aches if you're using the appropriate bike, correct gear, and making sure to stretch properly before and after the ride.
