Staying Healthy Over 40
By Randi Morse
I was always told that turning 40 would be difficult, but honestly I had no problems with it. As we age we tend to use the wisdom of the things we've experienced in effective ways. I don't get as stressed out now as I used to, and I still feel like I'm young, even though my kids like to remind me that I'm not! If you're in your 40s, there are a number of things that you can do to help keep your body, and your mind, feeling young and healthy.
Physical Health
Exercise is a great way to stay healthy, but there are a few types of exercises that you should focus on if you're trying to stay healthy. To keep your heart healthy, try cardiovascular workouts between three and four times a week. Looking to ward off osteoporosis? High impact activities, like jumping jacks, dancing, and sports that require a racket, are great for high impact. Strength training is a great way to help avoid chronic joint pain and to help you avoid injury.
Mental Health
Keeping on top of your mental health is just as important as you age as exercise is. There are a lot of changes that happen as we get older, both physically and mentally, which makes having support vital. If you're struggling, try keeping a journal and writing all of your thoughts down, or confiding in a close friend. Some people like to have weekly appointments with a counselor or therapist just to unpack all of their feelings.
Work Health
At the age of 40 a lot of people are settled nicely into their careers, but if you're feeling like something isn't quite right, don't hesitate to strike out and try something new. If you have a little nest egg set aside for a rainy day, use it to help cover your bills while you head toward your new career. It's not too late to go back to school, either, and there are a number of financial options available for an adult who is looking to earn their diploma or increase their education.
Aging doesn't have to be scary, so ignore anyone who tells you that 40 is an elderly age! Today's 40-year-olds are living healthy, happy, adventurous lives and are loving every minute of it.
