Ways to Enjoy Working Out
By Emily Lindholm
When you were a kid, staying active was easy. Kids run and play, using their bodies naturally. There's nothing inside their head saying, "I should do this today, I should work out today." They just do it without a thought! When we reach adulthood, and we're more focused on our responsibilities, working out becomes something to fit into the schedule, as opposed to something we just incorporate into our day. When we place this "should" mentality on it, it can be difficult to motivate ourselves to work out.
If you find yourself "shoulding" yourself to work out, let me list out some ideas for you to make working out fun again! Working out, in my personal opinion, should not feel like working out if you make it enjoyable. Try following these tips to put the bounce back in your workout routines.
Rollerblading
Remember in the '90s when everyone had a pair of rollerblades? Where did those things go? Well, they're still around, they're just not as popular as they used to be. But, come on, how much fun would it be to strap on some of those bad boys to your feet again and go for a roll through the park?
Walking
Walking is underrated. You can burn a lot of calories just from walking at a good fast pace. If you're a music lover, make a playlist before you go. If you love company, take a friend and use it as your social time as well. Don't ever think that walking is not a workout because it most certainly is!
Swimming
You don't need to swim intensive laps to get a good workout from swimming. Just splashing and swimming around in the pool with your kids or some friends does a lot on its own. So get a pool membership this summer, lather on the sunscreen, and take a dip. No need to make it intense, just have fun!
Take a New Class
Check out the classes in your area and try attending one you've never done before. Try an intro to aerial silk class or try Pilates instead of yoga one day. Go to hot yoga instead of Vinyassa. You get the picture, just mix it up a bit and see if it bursts some motivation and excitement.
Trampolining
When I was a kid, I always knew to make friends with the kids who had trampolines. Well, now trampolines are more accessible. You can go to a trampoline park and jump for two hours straight if you wish to. Try taking some friends or even book a trampoline party!
Conclusion
Working out doesn't have to be a drag. Try reverting to your playful, childish ways sometimes, and working out can be easy again. Mix it up, try new things, and choose activities that you'd like to build habits out of!
