Back Pain Can Happen to Anyone

By Stephen R. Farris

Did you know that back pain is the leading cause for people being disabled around the globe? Back pain is also one of the main reasons workers -- over 264 million per year -- miss time on the job. It's become more of a problem than we think, with at least half of the nation's population reporting that they have some type of back pain, according to research experts.

Back pain is not only limited to those who have jobs, it can also strike athletes, weekend warriors, or while doing simple chores around the house. You may associate back pain to seniors because of their age, but it doesn't discriminate. It can also affect young adults, teens, and children. There is no age limit to when back pain might strike someone.

Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to prevent back pain and seek relief without the use of over-the-counter medication or prescription medicine. Here's a few examples:

Exercising

To help relieve back pain, or prevent it from occurring, you should try doing a few low-impact exercises such as taking a brisk walk in the mornings or afternoons, or swimming a few laps in the pool. You might even try yoga type exercises, including tai chi.

Weight Loss

Being overweight can lead to back pain. Consider switching up the way you eat by choosing fresh fruits and raw vegetables instead of processed or prepackaged foods. Add protein to your meals with lean cuts of meat. For snacks, choose nuts and seeds over potato chips and cupcakes, and for beverages, choose water over sugary drinks.

Problem Pain from Little Things

You may not realize it, but those little things -- everyday items we use -- could eventually cause back pain. This could be from carrying that brick in your purse -- as most guys would say -- to fellows sitting on their overstuffed wallets in their back pockets. This also includes -- for students -- backpacks jammed full of books. Less is better, which translates to carrying only what you (ladies) need in those purses to lighten your load. Guys, carry the important items in your front pocket, such as credit cards, cash, and identification.

When the Pain Persists

If you've tried everything you know to relieve back pain, then it's probably time to visit your local chiropractor. Chiropractic care is an all-natural, non-invasive, and non-addictive form of treatment, using a hands-on approach to gently manipulate the spine to lessen the restrictions on your joints to help reduce your pain.
