Chiropractic Tips for Your Workspace
By Sara Butler
Many people spend a majority of their time behind a desk each day, which makes the proper setup of your desk even more important. A workspace that’s friendly to your back and body is essential for your continued health and wellness. Here are a few ergonomic tips to help you create a spine-friendly workspace from the chiropractors at The Joint.
Your Chair
A good, supportive chair is essential to a healthy workspace. You must find a chair that helps to support a healthy posture with:
- Adjustable height
- Comfortable cushion
- Arm support
- Ability to roll and swivel
It’s also important to remember to get up from your chair regularly -- at least once an hour. Try to set the alarm on your phone or have a message pop up on your computer screen to remind you to get up and move around.
Your Computer Screen
Do you have to look down, even slightly, to see your computer screen? That’s not a position recommended by chiropractors! Even looking down a little all day long will place stress and strain on your neck, upper back, and shoulders. Consider raising your computer screen to eye level. You can stack books or buy a stand to bring the screen up to where it needs to be.
Your Accessories
If you’re more of a laptop person, then you should consider creating a setup that uses a keyboard and mouse. This way, you can raise the screen up to eye level and put less pressure on your wrists and hands in the process. It will help you feel better and make your workstation more functional.
Your Desk
You may want to consider getting or creating a standing desk. Standing desks help you to maintain proper posture throughout the day since it’s much harder to slouch when you’re standing. It also helps to take some of the pressure off your lower back that sitting places on it while helping you to strengthen your core muscles as you stand up straight to work.
