Do You Know How to Prevent Back Pain?

Life can get stressful quickly once back pain hits us. Back pain is an incredibly common health issue, affecting millions of Americans every year. Still, because it can be brought on by so many causes, and because it can manifest in so many different symptoms, finding a way to even prevent it from every happening in the first place can feel like a difficult task. This is why it's so important to live a healthy, active lifestyle, and learn about what you can do to prevent back pain from affecting your life. Keep on reading to learn about the steps you can take to keep back pain at bay.  

Stay Active (But Don't Strain Yourself)

Living a sedentary lifestyle is one of the easiest ways in which you can ultimately harm your back and spine, in addition to the rest of the muscles and joints throughout your body.

The joints and ligaments along your back in particular thrive off of regular movement. Steady, gentle activity is what keeps your spine limber and strong, and therefore more likely to fend off instances of back pain. Whether you go for daily walks, practice yoga regularly, or hit the gym a few days a week, staying active is one of the best ways in which you can prevent back pain. You'll also likely be improving your mood, energy, and sleep -- what's not to love?

Of course, it should be mentioned that you shouldn't be pushing your physical limits -- if anything hurts or feels uncomfortable while exercising, be sure to stop and apply ice and heat to the affected area to prevent swelling and discomfort.  

Invest in Ergonomics

From your work station, to the couch you recharge on, to your bed, you need to make sure your back and spine are getting the support they deserve.

While at work, make sure your chair is outfitted with proper lumbar support. You'll also want to take the time to adjust your computer screen and chair height, so you're not hunching over your screen and placing unnecessary strain on your neck and shoulders.

While resting at the end of a long day, be sure to take that time to relax -- but check that your favorite couch or chair is providing your body with a comfortable place to relax in, and your posture isn't sagging uncomfortably into the seat in any way.

As for your bed, it's good to find a mattress which is the right amount of firmness, or softness, for your specific sleep position. Having the right pillow to support your neck and spine is also crucial for preventing upper back pain, so be sure to take the time to find a pillow (or two!) which supports your neck.
