Pain Is a Message, Don't Ignore It

By Paul Rothbart

Pain is a fact of life. There is no avoiding it. Unless you ensconce yourself in bubble wrap and never leave the cocoon, you will hurt sometimes. In fact, being encased and immobile will cause stress headaches, so even that wouldn't work. Headaches, migraines, muscle aches, joint and back pain -- they will all pop up from time to time. People have different tolerances for pain and many are proud of how they can ignore the hurt and keep going on. Admirable though this may seem, it's a bad idea. Pain is the body sending the brain a message that something is wrong. Your job is to heed the message and seek treatment.

It May Signal Injury

Pain that appears suddenly is often the sign of an injury. It may come after a fall or accident, making the injury obvious. But an injury can also come from a seemingly safe activity with nothing out of the ordinary. Pain in the stomach can be a problem in the gastrointestinal system. Likewise, a sore throat, earache, or headache could be an illness in those areas. Any pain of this type should be taken seriously. First aid can be applied and medical help should be sought for a diagnosis. It may not be serious, but you won't know that for sure unless you get it checked.

It Could Signal Bad Habits

Chronic pain may be connected to a disease, but it could also be poor habits. Headaches can occur because of lack of sleep. Stomachaches and intestinal distress can be caused by poor eating habits. Back pain and muscle soreness may be a sign of incorrect lifting habits or pushing your body beyond its capabilities. These signs should not be ignored. Get help to get to the bottom of the cause so you can make the changes to eliminate the problem. Pain like this is a warning and if ignored, the problems could become serious and permanent.

Dealing With Pain

We have established that there is no getting away from pain. But it does not have to negatively impact your health or quality of life. Consistent monitoring of any type of pain and taking the correct actions will help to ease and manage it. Eating well, exercising, and sleeping well are three keys. Regular medical checkups are also important. Chiropractic care can be a vital part of this monitoring. Exams can find issues in the back and joints and correct them before them become major problems. Many people find that they sleep better and manage stress better, which helps prevent migraines and tension headaches. A chiropractor will also know what signals your pain is sending and how to get to the source of the problem.

We all have to experience some pain in our lives. But it doesn't have to rule us. Pay attention to your body's pain signals and take corrective action. Consider a visit to The Joint Chiropractic. No appointment is necessary and you may find that regular chiropractic care is a big help in managing pain and correcting its causes.
