You Can Still Exercise With Back Pain

By Paul Rothbart

Part of a healthy lifestyle is regular exercise. That is a commonly known fact. It requires dedication and the willingness to exert the body beyond what it is used to in basic daily activities. But, what about those who suffer with lower back pain? Many forms of exercise, such as weightlifting, are off the table. The pain makes them difficult, if not impossible to perform, and the possibility of serious injury is always present. But sitting around all day with no exercise will also cause health problems. What can a back pain sufferer do? Here are some forms of exercise that can keep you in shape, without exacerbating your back pain.

Walking

Walking is something you have to do on a daily basis anyway and it is one of the best exercises there is. It doesn't have to be a speed walk. Set a comfortable pace that will get the heart pumping without flaring up the back pain. Walking is great for cardio, burns lots of calories, and if done carefully, can help strengthen the lower back. Stronger muscles generally lead to less pain. A daily walk is one of the best ways to maintain a healthy weight and keep in good shape without overly stressing any body part, including the back.

Swimming

The buoyancy of water reduces the effect of gravity and greatly lessens the amount of stress on the body. Swimming, like walking, is an excellent aerobic exercise, works the muscles, and burns calories. Be careful when choosing a preferred stroke. Avoid twisting the body from side to side. This may stress the back and cause pain. Walking through water is also very good exercise. It's gentle on the joints and the water provides a natural resistance for the muscles to work against.

Biking

Riding a bike can be relaxing and fun and is excellent exercise. It's great for cardio, builds strong thighs and calves, and burns plenty of calories. Choose a bike with a comfortable, ergonomic seat, and make sure to ride with a straight back. Start out with short rides and build up to longer ones as you get stronger. Biking can also be a means of transportation in good weather. Save money on gas while working out.

Back pain can make some activities unavailable, but that list does not have to include exercise. By choosing carefully, there are forms of exercise you can participate in to stay in top shape and strengthen the back. Another great way to minimize back pain and stay in shape is by dropping in at The Joint Chiropractic.
