Chiropractic Care for Sports Injuries

By Paul Rothbart

Not everyone is a professional athlete; in fact, that subset is a minority of the general population. But many people are active in sports. Perhaps you play on a high school or college team, maybe a local softball league, a round of golf or tennis on the weekend. Simply running and working out is participating in sports. Playing sports is fun and healthy, but injuries are not at all uncommon. When injuries occur, they pose problems. You're out of action until they heal, and amateur athletes may miss time from work. There's also the pain, which nobody wants to deal with. Injuries need to be healed, and even better if they are prevented. Many sports injuries may be helped by chiropractic care.

Common Sports Injuries

The most common injuries in sports are damage to joints. Running, jumping, throwing a ball, all place stress on various joints. Elbows, shoulders, and knees are susceptible to injury -- and ankles especially so. Muscles and ligaments can be pulled or torn. Hyperextensions and hyperflexions also happen fairly frequently. Any of these injuries require treatment. Damage to the back and neck may also happen while playing sports. Chiropractic care may be effective in helping to treat some injuries.

Chiropractic Treatment

A licensed chiropractor has been trained to diagnose sports injuries and treat many of them. Chiropractic can't help with everything. A very serious injury requiring surgery is outside the scope of chiropractic. But a chiropractor can make adjustments to get the spine and other joints aligned properly, relieving pain and restoring normal function. Chiropractic care can also help heal soft tissue damage. World class athletes Michael Jordan and Tom Brady have sworn by chiropractic care for years.

Preventing Sports Injuries

Warming up before a game, using proper form, and quality gear will all go a long way toward preventing injury. Seeing a chiropractor regularly may also be very helpful. Chiropractic care can keep the body functioning at its best. Joints that work the way they are supposed to are less likely to be damaged under the rigors of competition. A completely adjusted spine also can be a major factor in preventing injury. Whether you compete at a high level or are just a weekend warrior, seeing a chiropractor can help keep you in the game.

Participating in athletics is fun and good for the body and mind. Care must be taken to avoid injuries and treat them when they happen to prevent them from getting worse. Warming up and using proper techniques are essential. Seeing a chiropractor for regular treatment may also help prevent injuries and prevent them when they do happen.
